Rustic Diamonds and Why You Should Consider Them

Diamonds are one of those gemstones where not one size fits all. They are available in a variety of colors, cuts, and prices. And if you have been looking for a colored diamond, or even just a non-traditional diamond, you have probably come across rustic diamonds.

WHAT IS A RUSTIC DIAMOND?

A rustic diamond is a natural diamond that is lightly to heavily included with tiny mineral deposits, causing the stone’s appearance to look opaque, cloudy, smoky, or speckled. Many rustic diamonds look like a sparkly smoky stone that exudes streaks of contrasting color.  They come in a variety of hues, and despite their appearance, do usually exhibit some sparkle or glow due to their natural hardness.

The sparkle in the Rustic Rose Cut Gray Diamond Drop Hoop Earrings makes them a unique alternative to brilliant-cut traditional diamond earrings.

WHY ARE RUSTIC DIAMONDS SO POPULAR?

These once considered “imperfect” diamonds have become popular due to their unique and unusual coloration. Those very imperfections appeal to those who want a stone that is non-traditional and radiates a mysterious beauty. It’s still a diamond, but it does not resemble the traditional brilliant-cut diamonds found in many engagement rings. It feels more personalized.

COLORS OF RUSTIC DIAMONDS

Traditional brilliant cut diamonds come in an array of colors, and rustic diamonds do as well.  Some colors you can find these diamonds in are:

Salt & Pepper (Black and white speckled)
White (Some are more clear while some look speckled)
Red
Gray
Brown (sometimes called chocolate)
Yellow

CUTS FOR RUSTIC DIAMONDS

Most rustic diamonds are rose cut, a gemstone cut that was invented in the 16th century.  Rose-cut stones have a flat bottom and triangular facets that can vary from 3 to 24 facets, meant to resemble the petals of a rosebud. This cut also makes the stone appear larger because the top of the stone carries most of its weight. (You can read more about rose-cut diamonds here.)

The vintage-inspired rope detail accentuate the natural glow and sparkle of the white rustic rose cut diamond in the Juliet Rose Cut Diamond Ring.

Some rustic diamonds can also be found in the classic brilliant cut, as well as strikingly unique shapes like hexagons, kites, and other geometric cuts.

Rustic diamonds are for the person who likes diamonds but wants a stone that’s a bit more natural-looking and unusual. These stones are both earthy and glamorous, and each one is completely one-of-a-kind.
