The Versatility of Engagement Bands

For many decades, the diamond solitaire has been the most popular option for engagement rings.  Lately, more couples are considering alternative options, such as multi-diamond rings in various shapes and sizes, gemstone engagement rings, and rings crafted from non-traditional metals like sterling silver, as well as engagement rings that can be worn independently without a matching wedding band. They are looking for something more unique and personal, and in some cases, more "hand-friendly," such as an engagement band.

What is an Engagement Band?

An engagement band is similar to an eternity band in that it is set with multiple small gemstones, diamonds, or a mix of both.  In many cases, the stones are set on top of the band, extending to the sides, leaving most of the sides and back a plain band of smooth metal.  It's a timeless, yet stylish, alternative to a traditional diamond engagement ring, and it can be seamlessly layered with other rings, including a wedding band.  Its uncomplicated nature allows it to be more hand-friendly and easier to wear on an everyday basis.

Celebrity Engagement Bands

Engagement bands are not an entirely new concept.  Many famous brides in the past have chosen an engagement band over a traditional solitaire diamond engagement ring.

Marilyn Monroe was given a platinum eternity ring, featuring 36 baguette-cut diamonds, from her second husband and baseball legend, Joe DiMaggio.

Audrey Hepburn was given a set of three stacking rings rather than a single engagement ring when actor, director, and producer Mel Ferrer proposed.  Hepburn's engagement band set included a white gold eternity band set with baguette diamonds, along with two additional wedding bands in rose and yellow gold. This stackable ring set allowed Hepburn to mix and match her rings, reflecting her sophisticated and elegant style.

John Kennedy, Jr. proposed to Carolyn Bessette with a minimalistic sapphire and diamond eternity band that was inspired by a gold emerald band that belonged to his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy.
